Minimal snow totals Friday and milder temperatures for the weekend

The much-ballyhooed early December snow storm is beginning to wind down. Areas north and west of Mecklenburg County are reporting a couple inches of white stuff this Friday morning, while local amounts appear to be little more than a dusting as this is being written. The better moisture and colder air remained a few counties north just as forecasters indicated. Here's a Friday morning temperature map:

The circulation around a low pressure center just off the Outer Banks of North Carolina will keep low level moisture in the area. Thus, light rain and drizzle are possible through much of the daylight hours. The remainder of Friday looks to be cloudy and cold, with temperatures only topping out in the mid-30s. That's twenty degrees below the average high for the first week of December.

Tonight into Saturday morning fog is a distinct possibility given the moist ground and temperatures dropping into the upper 20s by dawn. Motorists should beware of slick spots overnight given wet pavement and below-freezing conditions. Tomorrow then looks milder as southwesterly winds usher in warmer air. Afternoon highs will climb back into the mid-40s under mostly cloudy skies.

Sunday will feature partly sunny skies, with local thermometers registering highs in the upper 40s. Given the warmer temperatures there won't be much white stuff left by the time the weekend wraps up.
