Folks out and about this Sunday morning need to be aware that the foggy conditions could hold more than the usual low visibility hazards. Temperatures at most - if not all - Mecklenburg County sites are at or below freezing as this is being written. That led to the weather advisory in place until 9:00 a.m. from NWS Wakefield concerning freezing fog.
The tiny water droplets that comprise the fog are likely to freeze on contact with any surface they touch. Thus roads, bridges, overpasses, and sidewalks should all be considered icy, with much care given to navigating them. After the 9 o'clock hour temperatures will climb above 32º to alleviate the hazard.
Skies will then be partly to mostly sunny the remainder of today, with highs topping out in the mid-40s this afternoon. However, wintry weather hasn't finished with Virginia. A clipper system will zoom across the nation tonight, bringing more snow by sunrise tomorrow. These small scale "wrinkles" on the upper air jet stream pattern move quickly:
However, total snow amounts across the county Monday will be in the 3-4 inch range as of a Sunday afternoon update. Numerical forecast models have trended upward with available moisture amounts, so expect a shovel-able snow this time around. Northeasterly breezes will gust up to 20 mph, making the mid-30s air temperature feel more like the mid-20s Monday.
Tuesday will again feature chilly temperatures with highs only around the 40º mark. The midweek period actually looks somewhat milder, with Wednesday and Thursday both likely to achieve afternoon temperatures in the low 50s. By Friday the next system will approach, bringing some rain which will be followed by another Arctic air invasion.
