Ironically, today - Monday - begins Virginia's Winter Weather Awareness Week, which is apropos given today's snowy forecast. As of this morning the highest totals of white stuff are expected across the U.S. Route 460 corridor. That's why areas just north of Mecklenburg County are under a Winter Storm Warning while locally there is a Winter Weather Advisory in place.
Here's the forecast total map from NWS Wakefield (the white star indicates Mecklenburg County):
While 2-3 inches are currently expected across most of the county the southern edge of the deeper totals isn't very far away, so 4+ inches in some spots aren't out of the question. Snow will swirl around today thanks to northeasterly winds gusting up to 20 mph.Meanwhile temperatures will slowly drop all day, bottoming out in the teens under clear skies by dawn Tuesday. Tomorrow will then be sunny but continued colder than average, with afternoon highs only in the upper 30s. Expect icy spots in the morning with some melting occurring later in the day.
Wednesday looks to be the mildest day of the week, but folks wanting a break in these cold conditions will have to wait a while. Yet another shot of Arctic air is expected to invade the local area for the weekend.
