This Friday morning began with temperatures dipping to near the 50º mark across Mecklenburg County. Partly sunny morning skies are accompanied by northeasterly breezes, the harbinger of a developing storm off the East Coast. This system won't be tropical in nature but will be a typical nor'easter, which can be fierce storms in and of themselves.
Temperatures today will top out near 70 degrees, which could well be the warmest temperature of the next three days. As the storm develops off the Carolina coastline clouds will overspread the county this afternoon, filtering the sun's warmth. By 8:00 p.m. local thermometers will sag to the 60º mark under cloudy skies, so this evening will feature more football-like conditions than recent Fridays.
Precipitation from the nor'easter looks to hold off locally until after lunch Saturday and then last through Sunday night. Total weekend rain amounts will increase from west to east across the county, ramping up even higher east of I-95 as shown in this NWS Wakefield forecast graphic:
Both Saturday and Sunday will remain cloudy and cool with temperatures each afternoon only in the mid- to upper 60s. The latter weekend day will also feature winds gusting over 20 mph as the storm crosses the Tidewater area on its way northward. Monday will bring much improved conditions.
