A cloudy dry Hump Day ahead of another cooldown

As this post is being penned a cold front is crossing the Blue Ridge mountains, with this - Wednesday - morning beginning under mostly cloudy skies and amid sticky humidity. Unfortunately, apart from a few scattered showers, the much needed rainfall hasn't made it into Mecklenburg County. Local gauges may yet pick up a tenth of an inch or so later today, but that paltry total won't do much to alleviate the increasingly dry conditions.

Following this first boundary skies will begin clearing by late afternoon, with highs today again nearing the 80º mark. The surface map at 8 o'clock this morning indicates a secondary cold front perched across the upper Midwest. After that next front pushes through tonight even cooler and drier air will pour into the region:

Thus, both temperatures and dew points will plunge after the sun sets this evening. Local thermometers will register overnight lows at or below 50º by dawn Thursday. Tomorrow then looks to be sunny and cool, with highs topping out only in the upper 60s accompanied by gusty northerly breezes.

At the moment the upcoming Columbus Day weekend forecast looks a bit iffy for Sunday into Monday. A potential nor'easter storm could affect local weather on those two days, but the picture is still a bit unclear as of this morning. Friday's blogpost will take a closer look at that.
