Warm and sunny conditions to begin the work week

An earlier blogpost hinted that the 80s might be done for the year after a late September intrusion of Canadian air. However, Mother Nature hasn't cooperated with that thought lately. Sunday's highs in Boydton and South Hill both reached or exceeded the 80ยบ mark, and today - Monday - looks to repeat that level of warmth across Mecklenburg County.

High pressure atop the Eastern Seaboard accompanied by dry air is allowing the October sun to warm the region above seasonal averages. Today will feature sunny skies and light winds, with most - if not all - local thermometers registering afternoon highs beginning with the numeral "8". Tonight those temperatures will drop into the upper 50s.

On Tuesday a cold front will begin the day over the Ohio Valley and, propelled by a vigorous upper level trough, will quickly scoot across the Appalachians. Thus tomorrow will begin under sunny skies, but clouds will move in ahead of the boundary during the afternoon. Winds will turn around out of the south, ushering in Gulf moisture and elevating dew points into the sticky mid-60s as temperatures top out in the low 80s.

Showers will arrive after midnight Tuesday. Wednesday will then be cooler and wet, with rainfall totals now looking to be a bit more than originally thought. Here's the accumulation expected across the NWS Wakefield coverage area:

Folks awaiting pumpkin spice and jacket weather will be somewhat appeased after the cold front passage. Late week temperatures will be much cooler!
