The current extended stretch of dry and sunny weather will be interrupted by some decent rainfall totals this week. First, however, today (Sunday) will feature another round of partly sunny skies, light northeasterly winds, and temperatures which will top out in the low 80s. Sunset will occur 20 minutes earlier than it did on September 1st, with Sol - our sun's official name - touching the western horizon at 7:22 p.m.
The culprit for this week's rainfall is an upper level low pressure center which will form over Virginia and the Carolinas late today. The influence from that feature will then create a surface low center along an old stalled out frontal boundary off the East Coast. Clouds will begin to overspread Mecklenburg County tonight, with showers likely by Monday afternoon.
The showers and even some possible thunderstorms will continue through Tuesday and most of Wednesday. Total rain amounts look to be substantial east of I-95, but this NWS Wakefield graphic also indicates a decent accumulation across Mecklenburg County:
The clouds and rainfall will hold down afternoon temperatures to the 60s and 70s through midweek, but those readings will rebound to the 80s by the end of the work week as sunshine returns to the region. This precipitation will be welcome given the current very dry conditions locally.
