If this was winter...!

The current weather setup would be ideal for a prolific winter snowstorm given that cold air was in place. A strengthening low pressure system less than 200 miles east of Wilmington NC this Monday morning will retrograde to the northwest, ending up over the Outer Banks early Tuesday morning as shown on this forecast graphic:

This system is already throwing Atlantic moisture inland, with skies becoming cloudier as today progresses. A slight chance of showers will push into Mecklenburg County late this afternoon, becoming a steadier rain overnight. Temperatures today will rise from morning lows near 60ยบ to a daily high in the mid-70s accompanied by northeasterly winds.

Tuesday then looks to be a wet, cool, and breezy day. Skies will remain overcast all day as substantial rainfall totals dampen the ground. Local rain gauges will register up to an inch of liquid by sunset tomorrow. Meanwhile, temperatures will only top out in the mid-60s, with northerly winds gusting over 20 mph making for a cool blustery Tuesday.

That low pressure center will gradually weaken and move off the coast late Wednesday. The rain and wind will gradually taper off, with Hump Day looking continued cool, damp, and cloudy. The gloominess will exit by late week, with sunshine and warmer temperatures moving back in by the weekend.
