No heat advisories/watches/warnings are posted for today (Friday). Folks can expect more "normal" levels of summertime heat and humidity as the weekend approaches. The average daily high for Mecklenburg County in late June is 89º, so today's forecast maximum in the low 90s isn't that far above the norm.
Also, as is typical this time of year, scattered afternoon showers and thunderstorms will be in play again today. The scattered nature of those downpours was evident Thursday, with Boydton receiving a third of an inch of rain while Clarksville, Chase City, and South Hill gauges recorded no precipitation. This brings to mind a favorite meme for summertime storms and precipitation forecasts:
The Storm Prediction Center has posted a Marginal Risk (level 1 of 5) for severe weather again today, with the chief threat being damaging straight line winds when storm updrafts collapse and send out strong outflows. And remember, if thunder is audible a storm is close enough for lightning to strike even if it's not raining at your location.
Saturday and Sunday both look to be a few degrees warmer than today. Afternoon highs in the mid-90s will be accompanied by more chances of scattered showers and storms. The heat index both weekend days will climb back above 100º, so folks with outdoor plans should keep heat safety measures in mind.
Happy Friday!
