Think cool thoughts: Christmas is six months from today!

Meanwhile, Mecklenburg County - along with most of the East Coast - is still in the throes of a multi-day heat wave. This Wednesday morning "low" temperatures around the area halted their overnight drop in the mid-70s thanks to drippy humidity (moist air holds heat better than dry air). This afternoon local thermometers will again top out near 100º, accompanied by dew points worthy of a tropical rain forest.

Until 8:00 p.m. today the county is under an Extreme Heat Warning, with heat indices likely to exceed 110º. This graphic describing heat-related illnesses may be repetitive but these conditions warrant showing it again to remind folks of the symptoms:

Thursday looks to be slightly less hot but still humid, with high temperatures topping out in the mid-90s. The Storm Prediction Center has the area under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe storms both Wednesday and Thursday. Showers and storms will be widely scattered, but any storm which can take advantage of these extreme conditions would intensify quickly. Be alert for strong damaging winds, blinding rain, and frequent lightning.

Speaking of lightning, the dangers of being outdoors when storms are near was emphasized yesterday. Twenty people were treated for injuries after a lightning bolt struck near them at Lake Murray in South Carolina. It wasn't raining at their location, but there were storms around with audible thunder. "When Thunder Roars Head Indoors" isn't just a cute saying...it saves lives.

The good news about this heat wave? The strong high pressure dome which brought these extreme conditions will weaken a bit by Friday. It'll still be hot, but not quite as fiercely so as the past few days.
