An anniversary Sunday and continued heat for the week

Today - Sunday June 29th - is the 13th anniversary of THE derecho of 2012. This was the damage path sketched out by the National Weather Service:

This was not the first occurrence of a derecho. It's just the one which brought this powerful weather phenomenon to the attention of folks in the Eastern U.S. In fact, one of these events tore across the Northern Plains and upper Midwest states a few days ago on June 20th. Nothing like this is forecast for Mecklenburg County or surrounding areas this upcoming week.

Temperatures will be several degrees warmer than average during the first half of the work week, topping out in the low to mid-90s along with more thunderstorms. Wednesday will feature a "cold" front crossing Virginia in the morning. That slow moving boundary will trigger showers and storms, but it won't usher in much cool air. Somewhat drier air will trickle in behind the front, such that dew points will back off slightly to end the week on a slightly less humid note.

Afternoon highs will top out at early July averages - near 90ยบ - for Wednesday and Thursday. Friday's weather looks to be sunny with morning lows near 70 and afternoon highs in the low 90s. The good news is that it appears Independence Day festivities won't be interrupted by afternoon storms...but stay tuned to forecasts for updates to that.
