Before looking at this week's Mecklenburg County weather it's worth remembering that today - April 27th - marks the fourteenth anniversary of the generational tornado "Super Outbreak" across the southern and eastern parts of the nation. Over 200 confirmed tornadoes occurred this day in 2011, causing 300+ deaths. Four of those deaths occurred in Virginia, with at least 3 tornado reports in neighboring Halifax County.
Fortunately the weather this year is very quiet. A cold front swept across Virginia Saturday evening, leaving behind cooler and drier air. Local thermometers registered Sunday morning lows of 49, 50, 45, and 52 degrees in South Hill, Boydton, Chase City, and Clarksville respectively. The slightly warmer reading at Clarksville was influenced by north winds crossing the relatively warm waters of Buggs Island Lake / Kerr Reservoir, which currently has water temperatures in the mid-50s.
Today will be sunny with afternoon highs in the low 70s, accompanied by more of those northerly breezes. The first couple days of the work week look to also be sunny, with afternoon temperatures warming back into the 80s by Tuesday. Chances of showers and thunderstorms re-enter the weather picture during the latter half of the week, with even warmer temperatures due into the area.
With the beginning of May arriving this week here's NOAA's precipitation outlook for the month ahead:
Hopefully the "Above" average precipitation shown over Virginia holds true. This spring has been dry so far, which doesn't bode well for the typically drier summer months.
