Damp with some rumbles of thunder to begin the final April weekend

Winds across Mecklenburg County will swing around from the southeast to more southerly later today. The stationary boundary which has been hanging over the Carolinas will finally move north of the region as a warm front. Skies will remain mostly cloudy and a few scattered showers will build in later today. Temperatures which began the day near the 60º mark will climb into the upper 70s this afternoon, accompanied by continued sticky humidity levels.

Those showers look to continue this evening into tonight, possibly punctuated by some thunder and lightning thanks to an upper level disturbance crossing the area. Saturday will dawn damp and cloudy as the next cold front approaches from the west. That boundary will pass through the county during the afternoon tomorrow, sparking more showers and likely some thunderstorms. No severe storms are expected, but lightning is always something to be wary of.

Much of Saturday will feature overcast skies, but the clouds should part by suppertime. Temperatures will top out in the low 80s tomorrow afternoon before cooler and drier air moves in behind the cold front. Overall rain totals from this event will be fairly light as shown on this NWS Wakefield forecast graphic:

Sunday then looks to be sunny and pleasant, with lower humidity and temperatures which will start off near 50º before climbing to the low 70s during the afternoon. That's about the average level of warmth for the last part of April.  A northwesterly breeze will make the latter weekend day feel very "spring-y".
