Severe Weather Awareness Week accompanies a warming trend

Before looking at the upcoming week's weather, did anyone wind up with a dirty car yesterday morning? Blame it on light rain showers Friday night which brought down dust suspended in the upper air. This graphic from NWS Wakefield shows that was courtesy of a dust storm out west:

Meanwhile, today will be at least partly sunny around Mecklenburg county with some high clouds filtering the sunshine. Blame those on a storm system scooting eastward along the Gulf states. Temperatures will climb from this morning's lows at or near the freezing mark to afternoon highs forecasted at 60ยบ. That will be the lowest afternoon temperature of this entire week!

Monday will feature more partly sunny conditions with a very slight chance of light showers after lunch. The aforementioned storm system will exit off the coast of Georgia tomorrow morning, and its rain shield will skirt along the Virginia / North Carolina state line. Local thermometers will begin the morning in the mid-30s before rising into the mid-60s for afternoon highs.

The rest of the work week looks to feature highs in the 70s(!) as spring flexes its atmospheric muscles, pushing against winter's chill. That annual struggle should remind folks that severe weather season is upon us. In response, this is "Severe Weather Awareness Week" here in Virginia. Follow that link each day for great information about the severe weather we can see in this part of the nation, including how to register for Tuesday morning's Tornado Drill.
