It's March, and if there was any doubt that this month can feature monumental clashes between cold and warm air take a look at this busy graphic covering March 3-7:
This Monday morning the Mecklenburg county "prize" for lowest temperature resulted in a tie between stations in Clarksville and South Hill, both of which dropped all the way to 21ยบ. High pressure is firmly in control of the weather today, and clear skies coupled with an increasingly higher sun angle will warm the area into the low 50s.
Local thermometers will register below-freezing readings again tonight under clear skies and amid calm winds. Tuesday will then feature partial sunshine under an increasing cloud cover as the next storm system approaches from the west. Out ahead of this system southerly breezes will pump in warmth and moisture, boosting tomorrow afternoon's highs into the low 60s.
Wednesday brings the potential for severe weather locally as that storm system and its powerful springtime wind field crosses the region. Heavy rain, damaging straight-line winds, and even a few tornadoes are all within the realm of possibility on Hump Day. Suffice it to say that having more than one way to receive weather warnings (NOAA weather radio, cellphone apps, local TV/radio, etc.) will be important in order to have advance notice to take shelter if severe weather occurs.
