Chilly, warmer, wilder, then chilly again

The weather rollercoaster will be in full swing this week...welcome to March!! Yesterday - March 1st - marked the beginning of meteorological spring, and the weather is certainly acting like it. In the wake of Saturday's cold front passage temperatures this (Sunday) morning ranged from 27º at Chase City to 30º in Clarksville.

This afternoon those readings will only climb into the mid- and upper 40s, a full ten degrees below today's upper 50s average despite full sunshine. (This is such a transition month that by March 31st the average highs will have climbed to the upper 60s around Mecklenburg county.) Monday will start out even chillier, with thermometers tomorrow morning bottoming out in the low 20s before clawing back up to the 50º mark by the afternoon.

Then Tuesday marks a significant upswing in warmth as south winds kick in ahead of the next low pressure system. Highs in the 60s and an increase in humidity are in store both that day and Wednesday. But those changes come with a price...there is a significant chance of severe weather Wednesday as that next system roars through. Here's the Storm Prediction Center's (SPC's) outlook for Hump Day:

The SPC has been highlighting this possibility for the past several days, an unusually long range expectation of severe weather. Then, behind this next storm system temperatures will again drop as more cold air is yanked into the region. Thursday will likely be breezy with temperatures struggling to top the 50º mark.

We'll be keeping an eye on Wednesday's potential for severe weather on both this blog and over at the Regarding Weather FB page. Meanwhile, buckle up for that temperature rollercoaster!
