The work week begins with more clouds than sun

Very strong high pressure centered over New England pushed a wedge of cold air southward across the Piedmont region over the weekend. This cold air damming (CAD) event will gradually ease out of the area later today as that high pressure moves off the coast. However, these CAD setups are typically tough to dislodge, so conditions today will be slow to improve.

This - Monday - morning's showers look to continue to dampen Mecklenburg county until near the lunch hour. Temperatures will climb from the upper 30s to afternoon highs at or just above the 50 degree mark. There may be a few peeks of sun today but overall skies will remain mostly cloudy. Here's a forecast surface temperature map at 7 o'clock this evening illustrating that "wedge" of cold air still hanging around:

Surface winds will swap around out of the southwest tonight, ushering warmer air into the area. Tuesday will dawn with partly sunny skies and the promise of much warmer temperatures. Afternoon highs tomorrow will climb into the mid- and upper 60s, well above the average for the date.

Wednesday looks wet but warm ahead of the next storm system approaching from the west. After that, a couple more cold fronts will chill the air again by next weekend.
