Tuesday's afternoon highs in the mid-60s are very likely to be repeated today (Wednesday) thanks to a warm front which will push north of Mecklenburg county. The proximity of that boundary brought enough moisture and still air to create this morning's thick fog around the area. The fog will mix out (not burn off) as the day progresses, but skies will remain mostly cloudy.
That warm front is associated with low pressure currently centered over Kentucky. As the low pressure makes its way across the Appalachians today it will drag along a cold front. That boundary will pass through Mecklenburg county after dark this evening. A few scattered showers will accompany that cold front, but rain totals will be very light.
Drier and seasonably cool air behind that cold front will bring sunshine and a northerly breeze on Thursday. After morning lows near 40 degrees local thermometers will climb into the upper 40s for afternoon highs. Then Friday morning temperatures will begin the day near freezing ahead of another cold front. This next shot of cold air will make the upcoming weekend feel very much like winter.
Speaking of winter, there is always a lot of online buzz about long range snow forecasts. (People get excited about the white stuff!) Don't be tempted to buy into the hype, since those forecasts can change considerably as the day approaches. This graphic helps illustrate the point:
