Chilly Wednesday followed by a wet Thursday

Remember the recent stretch of warmer than average and very dry weather? Yeah, throw that out the window for this midweek period. Temperatures this Wednesday morning dropped into the mid- and upper 30s around Mecklenburg county. A Frost Advisory was in effect until 8:00 a.m., so many folks likely had to scrape frosty windshields before heading out this morning.

Local thermometers will only climb into the mid-50s this afternoon as a more typical November air mass settles across the region. Northeasterly breezes will make the outdoors feel a bit cooler than that, so jackets and sweatshirts may be the order of the day. Clouds will then make their way overhead after sunset, which officially occurs at 5:06 p.m. in Clarksville and 5:04 in South Hill.

Thursday then looks to be wet, thanks to a very moist cold front / low pressure combination approaching from the west. An easterly breeze will combine with cloudy skies and temperatures only rising into the low 50s to make for a raw feeling. Showers will dot the ground by dawn tomorrow, and rainfall will become steadier and heavier as the morning progresses.

Precipitation will continue through the overnight hours tomorrow, finally ending up near the lunch hour Friday. Total rain amounts will be notable as shown on this NWS Wakefield forecast graphic:

This rain event will help alleviate the dry soil conditions locally, but the overall drought conditions will require much more liquid to subside. The overall weather pattern may have changed to allow that to happen, but that still remains to be seen as this autumn progresses.
