A cold front which passed through during the wee hours of Thursday morning opened the door for a cooler air mass to overspread Mecklenburg county. Given that plus clear skies and light winds local thermometers plummeted overnight. The "warm" spot this Friday morning was Boydton, where a weather station recorded a low of 44 degrees while other county stations hovered near the 40 degree mark.
Today will again feature bright sunshine and blue skies as the awesome "Chamber of Commerce" conditions continue. Temperatures will climb back into the low 70s this afternoon accompanied by a light southwesterly breeze. That wind direction will bring a bit more moisture into the area, which will prop up temperatures tonight. Local high school football games will start with thermometer readings in the low 60s before dropping to the mid-50s by games' end.
Another cold front will arrive Saturday morning, but it won't bring any rain. Skies will remain clear but winds following the front will shift around from the north. While afternoon highs tomorrow will top out in the mid-70s the cooler air looks to drop temperatures noticeably for Sunday and Monday. Both those days will see highs only in the low to mid-60s.
However, the cool down will be immediately followed by another warmup next week. The dichotomy is shown in these two panels:
While overnight frost and freeze warnings dominate the next few days on the left panel, the right hand panel indicates another period of above average warmth for the end of next week. The Halloween trick-or-treaters just might be a bit hot in those costumes!
