A couple of dry cold fronts but no rain in sight

The glorious clear skies and pleasant conditions of October 2024 will continue for a while longer. Today - Wednesday - began with temperatures in the mid-40s around Mecklenburg county. Those readings will climb into the upper 70s to near 80 degrees this afternoon under bright blue skies.

A cold front will be perched just west of the Appalachians at 8 pm this evening as shown here:

Any moisture associated with this relatively dry boundary will be wrung out of the atmosphere by the time it crosses the mountains. Thus the front's main effect locally will be to usher in cooler temperatures, with Thursday afternoon highs around the county looking to top out near 70. That's about the average at this point in October.

Another cold front will pass through the region over the weekend, cooling things down even more to begin next week. That boundary will also lack rainfall, with concerns over drought conditions returning to the area as this extended dry stretch continues. The longer range outlook is for temperatures to remain at or above average through the end of the month.
