Poor Potential Tropical Cyclone 8! It never strengthened enough to be named by the National Hurricane Center...but rain totaling over a foot and half wreaked havoc along the North Carolina coastline. The lesson here? It doesn't take a hurricane - or even a tropical storm - to have major impacts on us humans.
The impacts in Mecklenburg county were much less pronounced. At the writing of this post local rain gauges have recorded 0.96", 0.30", 0.41", and 0.51" respectively at Clarksville, Chase City, Boydton, and South Hill. The ghost of that storm system (the lonely red "L") is still swirling around over the mountains of South Carolina this Wednesday morning as shown on this surface map at 8:00 a.m.:
Another low pressure center is forming just off Virginia Beach as that tropical low weakens. Thus clouds and showers will hold sway across the county again today, with up to another quarter-inch of rain possible. Temperatures today will top out in the upper 70s, and there could be a rumble of thunder this afternoon.
