Tropical system drought relief?

In East Coast meteorological circles it's known that tropical systems will often mitigate a summertime dry condition "hangover". That axiom looks like it'll apply to this week as Potential Tropical Cyclone 8 develops just off the coast and moves inland. This graphic from the National Hurricane Center indicates that this system will likely strengthen into tropical storm Helene before it actually makes landfall later today:

The main impacts of this storm to Mecklenburg county will be rain...and plenty of it. Intermittent showers from the outer circulation bands are already creeping into the area under cloudy skies. However, rainfall totals today (Monday) will be light, and temperatures will top out in the mid-70s this afternoon. Northeast winds will gust up to 20 mph as the system strengthens.

Tonight the rain will become steadier, with up to a half-inch of liquid accumulating in county rain gauges by sunrise Tuesday. Easterly winds will be gusty overnight before calming a bit Tuesday afternoon. Tomorrow looks to be damp with another inch of rain possible under cloudy skies. There could also be a rumble of thunder in a few locales as the storm's center of circulation tracks inland across South Carolina.

By midweek the center looks to stall and weaken over the mountains of North Carolina. Showers and thunderstorms will stick around much of the rest of this work week, but sunshine will reappear over Mecklenburg county as the clouds from this system thin out.
