Summer returns to end August

This Sunday morning continues the cool and comfortable trend of recent days for Mecklenburg county. Local thermometers bottomed out in the upper 50s at sunrise and will top out in the mid-80s this afternoon under sunny skies. Both values are below late August averages.

Meanwhile, wildfire smoke is seeping into Virginia as shown on the graphic below. The yellow dots are recording stations which are registering Moderate air quality at the surface, while the green dots are still in the good range:

This evening's sunset at 7:52 p.m. could be very colorful as a result of smoke particles scattering the sun's rays, so keep those cameras/smartphones handy!

As the week progresses the heat dome which has hovered over the central U.S. will slide eastward. After one more fairly comfortable day on Monday more typical August weather will reassert itself across Mecklenburg county. Temperatures and dew points (true measure of humidity) will climb back to more summerish values, with afternoon highs in the 90s by Tuesday.

Unfortunately there is little substantial rain in this week's forecast to alleviate the dry conditions. Other than scattered showers or storms the next chance of decent rainfall doesn't look promising until late Friday into Saturday.
