Ready or not, the heat is back!

August is flexing its summertime muscles again today (Wednesday) and tomorrow. Both the heat and the humidity have roared back into Mecklenburg county. After morning readings in the low 70s local thermometers will climb into the mid-90s both this afternoon and Thursday.

The combination of higher temperatures and dew points will yield a heat index topping the triple digits both days. At the writing of this post the National Weather Service hasn't issued a heat advisory for today, but one is very likely for Thursday. Folks outdoors should be mindful of this return to more extreme conditions after the relative cool of the past couple weeks.

There is a chance for showers and storms Thursday evening as a backdoor cold front pushes south and west across Virginia. With the heat and humidity in place the precipitation could fire up during the afternoon, but most short range forecast models are holding it off until near or just after sunset tomorrow. The arrival of that boundary in Clarksville is shown on this forecast wind direction graph as a shift (circled in blue) from southerly to northeasterly winds:

That wind direction will bring in cooler air from off the Atlantic for Friday along with clouds and more rain. The Labor Day weekend then looks to feature a mixed bag of sun, clouds, and storms before a stronger cold front sweeps all that away. Friday's blog post will take a closer look at the holiday weekend weather.
