Labor Day weekend: the end of summer?

Traditionally the Labor Day weekend has marked the end of summer activities. This year it could also mean the end of the torrid summer conditions as well. A stalled frontal boundary across Virginia today - Friday - followed by the approach of two more vigorous cold fronts will change the character of Mecklenburg county's recent weather.

The actual forecast for today, Saturday, and Sunday actually looks very similar. Partly to mostly cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms will be the case each day. Temperatures will range from morning lows around 70 degrees before topping out in the upper 80s each afternoon. But none of the three days will be a total washout.

Overall there could be a fair amount of liquid recorded in area gauges. This is NWS Wakefield's forecast graphic for rainfall totals through Sunday evening:

Most of the rain looks to arrive during thunderstorms. The atmosphere is so waterlogged that any storm could produce heavy downpours accompanied by strong downdrafts. These could cause scattered damage in the form of downed trees or damage to buildings. And of course be mindful of the always dangerous lightning.

But back to those stronger cold fronts. By Monday (Labor Day) the second boundary will have scoured out the currently soggy air mass and replaced it with cooler and drier air out of Canada. Temperatures next week look very much like autumn!
