Continued "pre-September" conditions this week

The break in heat and humidity continues today - Wednesday - as Septemberish weather sticks around a while longer in Mecklenburg county. This morning's low temperatures were in the mid-60s while the afternoon highs will top out in the mid-80s. Skies will be mostly sunny, but there will be a small chance of brief late afternoon showers for some locales. Even so, humidity levels will be fairly comfortable.

By sunset this evening local thermometer readings will fall into the mid-70s. With calm winds, clear skies, and relatively dry air radiational cooling will be in full force, allowing temperatures to drop into the low 60s. The graphic illustrates this physical process:

Thursday's weather then looks to be very similar to today's but with little chance of afternoon showers. Under bright sunny skies tomorrow's high temperatures will rise into the mid-80s once again, still a couple degrees below mid-August averages.

Meanwhile Tropical Storm Ernesto is strengthening north of Puerto Rico this morning. It is forecast to become a major hurricane (at least a Category 3) by Friday. It will remain well off the East Coast as it moves toward the island of Bermuda, but Atlantic beachgoers this week will have to deal with the large waves and rip currents churned up by this storm.
