Sunny and pleasant Friday, but increasing chances of storms for the weekend

Today - Friday - looks to be another delightful mid-August day around Mecklenburg county. High pressure remains in control of the weather for one more day, keeping clear skies and comfortable humidity in place. Temperatures will climb from this morning's low 60s into the mid-80s during the afternoon.

That high pressure is also keeping Hurricane Ernesto away from the East Coast. This visible satellite image shows the tropical system as it takes aim on Bermuda:

The low pressure center (red "L") off New England is dissipating, while the one over Minnesota will be the next weather feature to affect Mecklenburg county.

Tonight the warm front associated with the latter low center will push eastward, opening the door for Gulf of Mexico moisture to surge northward. Cloud cover will increase overnight, and Saturday will feature partly sunny skies accompanied by typical summertime scattered afternoon showers and storms. Most locales will be dry as temperatures again top out in the mid-80s with southerly breezes.

Sunday looks to bring better chances of storms as the cold front associated with the aforementioned low pressure center crosses Virginia. The Storm Prediction Center has much of the Old Dominion under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe storms on Sunday. Those folks participating in the Clarksville Urban Slide will need to keep an eye on the sky, especially after the lunch hour. Temperatures will range from morning lows near 70 degrees to afternoon highs again in the mid-80s.

Happy water sliding!
