Sunshine and comfortable humidity for the last weekend of July

Another "cold" front crossing Virginia has stalled - again! - just about overtop Mecklenburg county this Friday morning. Both temperatures and dew points are in the low to mid-70s locally, but those values have already dropped into the upper 60s for many areas north of U.S. Route 460. A wrinkle along that boundary is forming into a nearby weak low pressure center.

As a result today's skies will be mostly cloudy with a light northeasterly breeze. Scattered showers and a thunderstorm are possible near and after the lunch hour. Temperatures will top out in the lower 80s this afternoon, while those dew points will stubbornly remain in the sticky 70s during the daylight hours.

After sunset the boundary and its low pressure center will have sagged far enough south such that drier air will finally work into the county. Skies will remain mostly cloudy until dawn Saturday, by which time temperatures will be down into the mid-60s. Tomorrow will then feature sunny skies, much more comfortable humidity, and afternoon highs in the mid-80s.

Sunday's conditions look similar, with temperatures starting the morning in the low 60s and then reaching the upper 80s during the afternoon. (That's near the average high for late July.) Winds will be mostly calm under continued sunny skies.

The payoff for the recent soggy weather is relief from the drought conditions in Mecklenburg county. Unfortunately that's not the case for much of the rest of the Old Dominion as shown in this week's Drought Monitor:

Hopefully those dry areas will see some beneficial rains soon!
