A soggy week ahead

The current weather pattern is quite a switch from conditions earlier this summer. The oven-like heat is gone, having been replaced by cooler temperatures and plentiful moisture. The National Weather Service in Wakefield is expecting lots of precipitation for Mecklenburg county between today - Monday - and Thursday morning as shown in this graphic:

Today will feature mostly cloudy skies with periods of showers and even some afternoon thunderstorms. A low pressure center developing along a nearby stationary front prompted the Storm Prediction Center to place the area under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe weather today. That includes a chance of damaging winds from thunderstorms with a small (non-zero) possibility of tornadoes across the region.

Thus folks should pay attention to potential weather alerts today, including the potential for flash flooding during heavy rain events. Temperatures which began the morning in the mid- to upper 70s will only climb into the low 80s for afternoon highs. Tonight the clouds and showers will continue as local thermometers register lows near 70 degrees.

Tuesday looks to feature slightly improved conditions under partly sunny skies. Occasional showers and storms will sweep through the county throughout the morning hours, but precipitation chances really increase during the afternoon (thanks to that sunshine helping to destabilize the sticky air). Highs tomorrow afternoon will climb into the upper 80s, about average at this point in the summer.

Weather during the remainder of the work week looks pretty similar, so expect more rain and clouds than sunshine and dryness. At least this should help with the drought conditions!
