Friday will feature the best weather day for LakeFest

The heat has broken! That's thanks to a "cold" front which pushed south of Mecklenburg county Thursday, firing up thunderstorms that dumped lots of rain across the area. (The Clarksville airport gauge recorded over 4 inches!!) Today - Friday - looks to be much quieter and drier as that boundary has settled across northern North Carolina.

Overall today's skies will be partly sunny, with temperatures climbing from morning lows in the mid-70s to afternoon highs in the mid-80s. Winds will be light out of the northeast as they usher in relatively cool air from off the Atlantic waters. There is a small chance of showers today but most areas look to remain dry, good news for the LakeFest activities in Clarksville. The cooler temperatures will help keep the outdoors relatively comfortable as well.

Saturday, however, holds more promise for showers and storms while that boundary wobbles back north as a warm front. Skies will be mostly cloudy, but any peeks of sunshine tomorrow will help destabilize the atmosphere and create the potential for stronger thunderstorms. The Storm Prediction Center has the county under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe storms tomorrow. Should a thunderstorm approach while folks are outdoors remember these tips about lightning:

By Sunday the ol' Bermuda High will nudge westward back toward the coast, pushing the decaying warm front even further north and west. Temperatures will top out Sunday afternoon in the upper 80s under partly sunny skies, accompanied by a continued chance of showers and storms. In fact, the potential for afternoon and evening rainfall looks to continue throughout next week. That should help alleviate the drought conditions locally!
