Heat and humidity will bring showers and thunderstorms

With the return of hot and humid air this week Mecklenburg county will see its share of showers and thunderstorms. This Monday morning a few areas of light rain are crossing the area, while this afternoon holds the potential for thunderstorms. An upper level disturbance will help create a small surface low pressure center across Southside Virginia, which will in turn foster the development of thunderstorms.

Severe storms aren't anticipated anytime soon, but all thunderstorms spit out lightning which is a threat especially to folks outdoors. This graphic is a reminder of some do's and don'ts when thunder rumbles:

Temperatures which began today in the upper 60s will climb to the mid-80s as southwesterly winds continue to usher in warm moist air. Skies will be partly sunny, with any extended period of sunshine creating atmospheric instability which could fuel those storms. Precipitation chances will continue after sunset as another weak upper level disturbance slides across the area.

Tuesday will begin with lows in the mid-60s under mostly sunny skies. More afternoon showers and thunderstorms can be expected, with the coverage depending on how far south and west a backdoor cold front progresses. If the showers and storms hold off late enough tomorrow temperatures could top out near 90 degrees. But several forecast models indicate highs will top out in the low to mid-80s before precipitation arrives.

Storm chances continue into Tuesday night, with Wednesday's conditions looking like a "rinse and repeat" of the first two days of this work week. Summer weather is here!
