Heat, humidity, and unsettled weather this week

The work week ahead looks a bit different than the dry and cool conditions of the past few days. A series of fronts will cross the country and weaken as they approach the East Coast. This is due to the annual summertime march northward of the jet stream, the steering mechanism for storm systems. These systems will lose most of their "punch" before they reach Mecklenburg county.

The result locally will be an increase in both temperature and humidity each day as warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico creeps northward. Spotty showers and storms will arrive at intervals this week, but most days will feature some sunshine. Conditions will give rise to this common public perception of summer weather forecasting(😁):

Today - Sunday - afternoon temperatures will climb into the low 80s as clouds fill in overhead. There could be a light sprinkle this morning, but the precipitation will mostly hold off until late tonight. Thermometers will drop only into the low 60s by dawn Monday, a far cry from the recent 40s and 50s!

Until Friday the remainder of the work week will continue to resemble the image above. During the wee hours of Friday a stronger cold front looks to work its way across the county, bringing drier air and more settled conditions just in time for next weekend.
