The warmup continues midweek

Local thermometers began this Wednesday morning near the 60 degree mark for a cool start to the day. This afternoon's highs in the upper 80s will foreshadow the warmth around Mecklenburg county during the run-up to Memorial Day weekend. Dew points have also risen into the 60s, resulting in an increase in the stickiness factor just in time for the semi-official kickoff to summer.

Today will be mostly sunny and dry. Thursday will start out that way, but a cold front approaching from the west will usher in some clouds during the afternoon. By the dinner hour tomorrow showers and thunderstorms will be something to watch out for. Some of those storms may produce hail and strong winds in addition to always dangerous lightning. Having more than one weather warning source (NOAA weather radio, cellphone apps, local TV/radio, etc) at hand would be a good idea.

This trend of afternoon storms looks to continue throughout the holiday weekend, so those planning to spend time out on Buggs Island Lake / Kerr Reservoir should remain mindful of changing weather conditions. Another consideration for folks on or near the lake is the water temperature. The top panel of this graphic indicates that current water temperatures near the dam are still in the low 60s. The bottom panel is a warning about being immersed in water less than 70 degrees.

It may be hot in a boat but be careful about diving into the cool waters!
