The 80s make a return this week

This Sunday morning Mecklenburg county begins the process of drying out. Friday night and yesterday rain gauges registered over three-quarters of an inch of liquid in Clarksville, Boydton, and Chase City. Meanwhile, the South Hill airport gauge collected only a quarter-inch during the same period. All locations began today with temperatures in the upper 50s, with the low 70s expected for afternoon highs.

All the rain this past week perturbed local streams and rivers. The water level readings for Allen Creek at Boydton show a bump from the weekend rain, minor in comparison to last week's deluge:

The chance of rain today is low but not zero. A couple of light showers could sneak into the county from the north this afternoon and evening as low pressure spins around off the coast, pulling Atlantic moisture into the region. Overcast skies this morning will slowly break up after the lunch hour, allowing some peeks of sunshine this afternoon.

Then, as high pressure takes total control of local weather the work week looks dry and much warmer. Temperatures Monday afternoon will reach the mid-70s under partly sunny skies, and by Tuesday afternoon highs will climb back into the 80s amid full sunshine. Those readings will hold into the Memorial Day weekend, with both humidity and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms increasing for the latter half of the week.
