Strong to severe storms will end the holiday weekend

The Memorial Day weekend is certainly playing its role as the unofficial beginning of the summer season. After a relatively benign month of May heat, humidity, and storms have all punctuated the region the past couple of days. Those conditions will culminate in the chance for severe weather Sunday evening through Monday around Mecklenburg county.

This Sunday morning local thermometers recorded lows in the mid- to upper 60s, indicative of higher humidity propping up temperatures by holding in yesterday's heat. This afternoon highs will top out near 90 degrees under mostly sunny skies, but a change is lurking just over the western horizon. A couple of vigorous upper level impulses ahead of a cold front will trigger strong thunderstorms as darkness arrives this evening. As a result the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has Virginia under a Marginal Risk - level 1 of 5 - for severe storms today.

Another round of storms is likely later tonight into Monday morning, with a third - stronger - round possible Monday afternoon. The SPC has issued a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather for tomorrow, with the potential for that to be bumped up a category depending on how conditions evolve tonight. Tomorrow won't be cloudy all day, but the flip side is that sunshine will increase the potential for severe storms during the afternoon and evening hours.

Any storms will feature heavy rain, strong straight line winds, possible hail, and - of course - lightning. The chance of tornadoes exists as well, but those odds are lower than the other threats. To lessen weather worries folks should take a two step approach to this severe weather potential:

(1) Have MORE THAN one way of receiving severe weather warnings as illustrated here:

(2) Have a plan to take action already figured out if a warning is issued for your location (hoping the storms miss you is NOT a plan):

So what's the good news? After the cold front pushes through on Monday the remainder of the week looks cooler, less humid, and sunny!
