Raucous weather Monday followed by calmer conditions this week

Sunday's roughest weather mostly missed Mecklenburg county to the north. Today - Monday, Memorial Day - will feature several rounds of showers and storms, with the Storm Prediction Center placing much of Virginia east of the mountains under a Slight Risk (level 2 of 5) of severe weather. Today's forecast may be best summed up by quoting from this morning's NWS Wakefield forecast discussion: "THE SETUP FOR TODAY IS COMPLICATED".

Several upper level disturbances will interact with the sticky air at the surface today. This morning's dew points are in the upper 60s around the county, a very juicy value. Combined with available wind shear and instability this high moisture content may lead to any or all modes of severe weather: damaging straight line winds, large hail, and even the potential for tornadoes. Thus folks need to be weather aware on this day of national remembrance. Keep multiple sources of receiving warnings close at hand.

Partial sunshine this morning and afternoon will add to the fuel for storms and will also boost temperatures into the upper 80s. Things will begin to calm down after sunset, especially once an approaching cold front pushes through this evening as shown on this forecast map for 2 o'clock Tuesday morning:

Behind this boundary tomorrow actually looks to bring delightful conditions. Tuesday afternoon's temperatures will top out in the mid-80s under bright sunshine, while dew points drop into the more comfortable 50s. This trend of nice weather will continue for the remainder of the work week.
