Sometimes Mecklenburg county weather just doesn't cooperate with the forecast. Yesterday - Tuesday - was supposed to feature clear skies and afternoon temperatures near 70 degrees. (That did happen in Danville, where the high reached 72!) Unfortunately clouds from the coastal low pressure system didn't clear away locally until late afternoon, so Tuesday's high only reached the low 60s around the county.
Today (Wednesday) there is little doubt that skies will remain overcast all day. This morning's widespread foggy conditions are indicative of the high moisture content of the air. That fog should thin out by lunchtime, but rain will continue most of today and throughout tonight. County rain gauges will record between a half-inch and an inch of liquid by the time precipitation ends Thursday morning.
As part of this week's Severe Weather Awareness emphasis here in Virginia today's focus is on Severe Thunderstorms. Most wind damage reports come from these powerful storms, not from tornadoes. Also, many folks don't realize that lightning - although dangerous - is NOT a criterion for a severe thunderstorm. So what is? Check out this short video:
Thursday looks to be at least partly sunny, with afternoon temperatures climbing into the mid- and upper 60s after some early morning showers. Then, at 9:45 a.m. there will be a statewide Tornado Drill as this week's Severe Weather Awareness emphasis continues. Businesses, schools, and homeowners are all encouraged to sign up for this drill and participate in this important safety exercise.
Happy Wednesday!
