Today - Friday - looks to be partly sunny with cloud cover increasing this afternoon. Temperatures which began the day in the mid-40s will bump into the low to mid-60s for daily highs, accompanied by light easterly winds. By midnight showers will enter Mecklenburg county, beginning another wet Saturday.
Tomorrow then will feature overcast skies and plenty of rain, with the possibility of a few rumbles of thunder. The temperature range will resemble today's, with morning lows in the 40s and afternoon highs in the low 60s. By nightfall the low pressure center responsible for the clouds and precipitation will pass almost overhead the county on its way northeast. With an inch or more of rain expected there could be some local flooding tomorrow, so be on the lookout.
After that low pressure moves away it will intensify into another nor'easter pounding the New England states. The resulting pressure gradient will create strong westerly winds around Mecklenburg county on Sunday, with gusts up to 30 mph expected. The good news is that skies will be mostly clear to end the weekend, with afternoon temperatures topping out in the mid-50s.
Friday is also the end of Virginia's Severe Weather Awareness Week, with today's emphasis on Outdoor Weather Safety. One chief threat to folks outdoors is lightning (spelled without an "e"!!), which sometimes isn't given enough respect. This two panel graphic provides safety information.
The left panel is especially relevant for outdoor sports like baseball and soccer. If thunder is heard, evacuate the field immediately. Don't wait for someone else to make that call. The risk is too great. Remember, "When Thunder Roars, Go Indoors".
Oh, also remember that Saturday night is the switch to Daylight Saving Time. Folks that have clocks and watches that don't automatically reset should remember to move them ahead one hour before going to bed Saturday night. Otherwise you could be late for everything on Sunday!
