Today - Monday - began with temperatures in the upper 40s around Mecklenburg county. Sunny skies this morning will give way to clouds and showers after lunch thanks to a low pressure center moving up the East Coast. That small storm system, just south of Cape Hatteras as this is written, will track toward and through the Tidewater region on its way northward today.
Local thermometers will top out in the mid-60s this afternoon, accompanied by northeasterly breezes in the 5-8 mph range. Clouds and showers look to continue this evening as that low pressure slowly moves away. Temperatures will only drop to near 50 degrees by sunrise tomorrow at 6:40 a.m., by which time the clouds will be clearing away. Tuesday then will turn out sunny and pleasant with afternoon highs approaching 70(!) degrees.
Meanwhile, even though this week's weather is benign today begins Virginia's Severe Weather Awareness Week. Look for relevant social media posts by the National Weather Service office in Wakefield and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management. The emphasis today is on Watches and Warnings, and there are several videos available on the website. This graphic sums up today's emphasis:
Tomorrow's topic: Tornadoes!
