Mecklenburg county temperatures will be warmer than late February averages during the first part of the work week. Southerly breezes are pumping warm moist air northward into the region, resulting in this afternoon's highs in the low to mid-60s. However, today's warmth and sunshine will be marred by clouds and scattered light showers arriving after the lunch hour. These can be attributed to an upper air short wave trough crossing southern Virginia this afternoon.
As shown above these features are smaller scale "wrinkles" superimposed on the larger waves of the jet stream flow. Today's short wave effects will result in less than a tenth of an inch of liquid collecting in county gauges.
Tuesday will begin with temperatures in the mid-40s under partly sunny skies. Warm southerly winds will increase tomorrow, gusting over 20 mph at times ahead of a large storm system gathering strength across the Great Lakes region. Despite more clouds and showers arriving during the afternoon tomorrow's highs will creep into the mid- and upper 60s. Wednesday then looks cloudy, breezy, and very warm as Mecklenburg county thermometers climb into the low 70s with more scattered showers.
Also, a reminder that next week - March 4th through 8th - is Virginia's annual Severe Weather Awareness Week. Lots of information about the upcoming severe weather season will be available, with each day providing a different emphasis. Note that the annual Tornado Drill will occur on Thursday, March 7th. Be sure to register your business, school, or home and participate in this potentially life saving exercise.
