One more day of Arctic chill before a warmup

Today - Sunday - looks to be the last gasp of the recent Arctic air invasions. County-wide weather stations registered lows in the teens this morning, with Boydton winning the prize(?) at 14 degrees. Today's sunshine will only help warm the area into the upper 30s, still well below the mid-January average of 50 degrees. Then an atmospheric pattern change arrives for the work week.

Speaking of averages this past week was the exact period when local residents can expect the coldest part of winter. This graphic illustrates that situation for the lower 48 states, with the yellow star representing Mecklenburg county:

After one more round of bone-chilling temperatures Monday morning a warmup will commence as the Arctic high pressure slides off the East Coast. Afternoon thermometer readings will rise into the mid-40s tomorrow afternoon, and by the end of the work week those same sensors will be registering the low 70s! The warmth comes with a tradeoff, however: clouds and rain will dominate the weather from midweek through next weekend.

This warmer pattern looks to continue through the end of the month and into February. That doesn't mean the potential for cold weather - and even snow - is over for the winter. Stay tuned!
