Temperatures around Mecklenburg county this Friday morning remained at or just above the freezing mark. Thus any light precipitation that did fall (0.03" at the South Hill airport) remained liquid. Behind this weak and moisture-starved system another Arctic cold front is crossing the Blue Ridge mountains as this is being written.
The upshot is that skies will clear this morning as blustery west winds scour away the clouds. Behind this boundary round two of Arctic air will spill into the area, with temperatures only clawing their way into the mid-40s this afternoon. Wind gusts over 25 mph will make it feel much cooler than that, while dew points will again take the plunge into desert dry territory (more static electricity is on the way!).
Saturday and Sunday will thus both feature well below average cold, with county thermometers struggling to make it above the freezing mark for afternoon highs. The flip side of that will be frigid morning lows in the teens. Winds will remain fairly strong with gusts over 20 mph through Saturday evening before finally settling down a bit on Sunday.
There is some good news, however. This Arctic air mass will begin to lift out on Monday, with next week looking to feature at or even above average temperatures. Another piece of welcome news is that the moisture from these recent storm systems has put quite a dent in Virginia's drought conditions. Here's the latest Drought Monitor:
Happy Friday!
