A warmer and moister week lies ahead

Yes, it's been very cold in Mecklenburg county! Even the Buggs Island Lake / Kerr Reservoir water temperatures have felt the chill. Here's a graph of the water temperature change at the dam over the past week:

Moreover, this Monday morning local thermometers once again dropped into the teens. But a pattern change is in the wind - literally - with a warmup commencing today. The frigid and arid Arctic air is retreating off the East Coast while milder and moister air moves in via southwesterly winds. Thus temperatures this afternoon will rise into the mid-40s under sunny skies. That's still below the average January daily high of 50 degrees, but it's a start.

The tradeoff for this warming trend will be overcast skies and showers most of this week. High clouds will begin rolling in tonight, with Tuesday looking mostly cloudy. After morning lows in the upper 20s tomorrow afternoon's temperatures will top out near that 50 degree January average. There is a slight chance of showers after lunch, but rain amounts through Tuesday night will be light.

Skies will remain mostly cloudy through the work week, although there will be occasional peeks of sunshine. Rain chances and amounts will steadily increase as the week progresses. The good news? Afternoon temperatures from Wednesday on will soar into the 60s and even the 70s!!
