A sunny but chilly midweek and then...the "S" word?

Tuesday's rainfall totals across Mecklenburg County were mostly in the half-inch range, but the gauge in Boydton "won" the contest at just under an inch. This rain helped - but won't erase - the drought conditions that developed over the course of 2025. Hopefully a wetter pattern will develop and stick around for a while to rebuild soil moistures and increase stream flows.

Wednesday and Thursday will both be dry and sunny, with temperatures remaining below average for the first week of December. Local thermometers registered lows this morning in the mid-20s and will only rise into the mid-40s this afternoon. After another cold start Thursday will be a bit warmer, with temperatures topping out in the low 50s after lunch.

Then, it's that time of year again (sigh...) when snow enthusiasts noisily latch onto any and all hopes for wintry weather. Friday looks to scratch some of that itch as a chilly air mass settles in behind a cold front just as another storm system forms along the Gulf coast. With surface temperatures only in the mid-30s and an increase in available moisture there's a pretty good chance of wintry precipitation locally Friday.

However, not all of it will be in the form of snow. Warmer air overhead will set the stage for a mixed bag of frozen precipitation as illustrated on this graphic:

Flakes will begin to fly after midnight Thursday, continuing through most of the day Friday before switching over to rain late in the afternoon. Sleet and/or freezing rain will enter the picture Friday night.

Details will become clearer over the next 24-48 hours, but plan for a messy (and cold) day Friday. At the moment the most likely scenario is for less than an inch of snow across the county. Stay tuned to local weather sources (NWS Wakefield, TV/radio) for updates.
