Cool, dry, and breezy to begin the work week

A vigorous but mostly dry cold front methodically pushed across Mecklenburg County after dark Sunday evening, with Clarksville and Chase City experiencing the wind shift along the boundary at or just after 9:15 p.m. The front then reached the South Hill airport at the eastern edge of the county around 10:00 p.m. Less than a tenth of an inch of liquid registered in local rain gauges while winds gusted up to 30-40 mph in several spots yesterday.

Today - Monday - will be sunny and breezy, with westerly winds gusting over 20 mph at times. Temperatures will climb from morning lows in the upper 40s to afternoon maxima in the upper 60s. The winds will calm a bit after sunset, and under clear skies and amid very dry air the overnight temperatures will sag into the low 40s.

Tuesday then looks to be the warmest day of the week. Ahead of the next cold front the still gusty winds will swap around out of the southwest, bringing warmer air into the county. Tomorrow's highs will be in the low to mid-70s under continued sunny skies. That next boundary will pass across the area Tuesday evening after dark, with no rain and only a few clouds expected from it.

The clear skies and dry air will make for some favorable night time viewing of comet Lemmon. Looking northwest just after full dark folks might be able to see it with the naked eye, but it will certainly be visible in binoculars and telescopes.
