"Continental polar" air takes charge of the weather

Air masses affecting the U.S. come from several source regions as shown here:

Recent cold fronts passing through Mecklenburg County herald the autumn takeover by "continental polar" air masses. Those originate over Canada and feature dry and cold conditions, taking control from the typical summertime "maritime tropical" air. Occasionally a cool season coastal storm (nor'easter) will bring in "maritime polar" air from off the Atlantic, which can result in East Coast snow...but that's a topic for another time.

During last night's cold front passage areas along and west of the Blue Ridge received a bit of rain, but the moisture was all wrung out by the time the boundary reached Mecklenburg County. Thus, no rain locally! Temperatures today - Wednesday - will range from this morning's lows near 50ยบ to afternoon highs topping out in the upper 60s. Westerly winds will gust up to 20 mph at times today.

Local thermometers will dive into the low 40s by sunrise Thursday thanks to lighter winds and the dry air. Tomorrow's conditions then look to be a near duplicate of today's, with similar afternoon highs but lighter breezes. In fact, the weather over the next several days will resemble these midweek conditions. For the moment the dryness will continue, with afternoon highs in the 60s taking charge.
