The last summer weekend looks very nice

Many of us were taught that autumn arrives on or about September 22nd, the equinox. That is true from an astronomical viewpoint. However, from a cultural standpoint the Labor Day holiday represents the dividing line between summer and autumn. And with the first day of September arriving Monday this weekend represents the end of meteorological summer

Regardless of how we divide up the calendar the weather this weekend will continue to feature autumn's cooler regime. This - Friday - morning temperatures across Mecklenburg County again dipped into the mid- and upper 50s, while highs this afternoon will top out in the lower 80s. Both those figures are several degrees below late August averages.

Yet another reinforcing cold front will sweep through the area during the wee hours of Saturday, ushering more cool and dry air into the region. Saturday, Sunday, and Labor Day Monday will each bring mostly sunny skies and temperatures similar to that of today's. This pattern is thanks to a persistent southward dip in the jet stream across the eastern half of the nation.

Meanwhile, a corresponding northward bulge in the jet stream is bringing warmer than average conditions to western parts of the U.S. as shown in this graphic:

The next chance at substantial rainfall locally could arrive late next week courtesy of a coastal storm, but that's still to be determined. Meanwhile, enjoy the sunny, cooler, and comfortable conditions!
