A taste of autumn

This Sunday morning's Mecklenburg County low temperature "award" goes to Chase City. where the airport thermometer bottomed out at 62º. Drier air and mild temperatures are widespread across the county, with afternoon thermometer readings expected to top out in the mid-80s. That's just about the average high temperature for the last week of August.

A couple of light showers may swing across the area this evening, but no downpours are expected. Then, shortly after the 6:40 a.m. sunrise Monday a strong autumn-like cold front will sweep through. That boundary represents the leading edge of much cooler and drier air which will take up residence for the immediate future. Scattered showers may pop up near lunchtime tomorrow, but any such activity would be few and far between.

After Monday afternoon's high in the mid-80s this week's temperatures will drop to autumn-like levels. Morning lows at or below 60º and afternoon maxima in the upper 70s will be the rule rather than the exception. That's 8-10 degrees below the late August average. The cooler regime will continue through the Labor Day weekend as indicated on this Weather Prediction Center graphic:

Along with the lower temperatures this week looks to remain dry with little or no chance of rain after Monday. And as for the tropics, there are no systems which will threaten the continental U.S. anytime soon.

Happy Sunday!
