More showers and storms to begin the work week

An always pesky stationary front wobbled south of Mecklenburg County late Sunday afternoon. That boundary hasn't gone very far south, however. It'll remain close enough to help fire up more showers and storms today (Monday). This surface map at 8 o'clock this morning illustrates:

Monday morning temperatures and dew points are both hovering in the low 70s, a tropical feeling to begin the work week. Skies will be mostly cloudy today, although some breaks in the overcast will boost available instability and thus increase the potential for convection. Today's highs will reach the low 80s before more afternoon showers and storms fire up. Those will continue into the evening hours.

Tuesday will start out much the same as today, with temperatures in the low 70s under cloud cover. But most of the overcast will clear away after the lunch hour. That stationary front will get kicked back north of the area by an approaching upper level trough. The resulting sunshine and southwesterly breezes will boost tomorrow afternoon's highs into the upper 80s. There will still be a decent chance at showers and storms, but that activity may hold off until the dinner hour and continue after sunset.

Wednesday then looks to be drier and hotter. That morning's blog post will take a closer look at the midweek period.
